FAQ

Does my child need an MD prescription for evaluation and services?

If you will be seeking reimbursement from your insurance company for occupational therapy evaluation/services, then a referral from your child’s physician is required in order to initiate care. This does not apply to those who choose to pay out of pocket for occupational therapy. We are happy to discuss this further if you have any questions.

What insurances do you take?

Cater 2 Kids OT is now contracted with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (PPO, HMO, Indemnity), CIGNA, Neighborhood Health Plan, Harvard Pilgrim, Aetna, and United Health Care. We are not currently accepting new MassHealth clients.

Cater 2 Kids OT is unable to guarantee your insurance company will provide coverage and reimbursement. We encourage you to discuss coverage and family/patient responsibility with your insurance company prior to beginning occupational therapy.

Do you bill out-of-network to my insurance company?

We do not bill out-of-network. You will be billed directly and we’ll provide the CPT codes and any additional documentation your insurance carrier may require for reimbursement.

Our Step-By-Step Evaluation Approach

First, we will schedule a 10-minute phone call with you to discuss your concerns and your child’s needs. This will help us to determine whether your child may benefit from an occupational therapy evaluation, or if a referral to another professional is recommended.

Prior to the scheduled evaluation, you will either receive forms via email or be directed to the “Getting Started/Forms” link on our website. We request that the required forms be completed and returned to us prior to the evaluation appointment. If this is not possible, please bring the completed paperwork on the day of the evaluation.

The evaluation process will include clinical observation, parent interview and reporting, as well as standardized assessment tasks and unstructured activities. The evaluation process aims to paint a picture of the whole child, including areas of strengths and areas of concern, in order to assist the occupational therapist in tailoring the treatment plan and recommendations to meet the specific needs of your child. Evaluations are approximately one (1) hour in length and are usually scheduled during morning hours. While the initial evaluation lasts 1 hour, the evaluation process will continue throughout the first few appointments, as therapist and child develop a relationship.

Following the evaluation, therapists prepare a written report and provide the opportunity for a parent conference to discuss results. The evaluation write-up can be a lengthy process and to ensure consistency across environments, and it may include follow-up phone calls with you and/or other members of the child’s team. While we prefer to explain the results of the evaluation and be available to answer questions, the conference is not mandatory and can be completed over the phone or in person.
